Results from ONE Fight Night 8 between Itsuki Hirata and Ham Seo Hee
Itsuki Hirata, an emerging star from Japan, returned to the ring on Friday night for a pivotal atomweight match against Ham Seo Hee, the No. 2 contender.
Hirata failed weight and hydration tests, which prevented the pair from fighting as initially planned at ONE 163 in November. After Ham resisted accepting a catchweight match, the fight was abandoned. As the two prepared for their highly awaited showdown on Friday night, Ham continued to attack Hirata, branding him unprofessional and unapologetic for losing weight.
In the first round, both women were reluctant to start, but Ham put pressure on right away. A quick move by Hirata for her first takedown attempt two minutes in allowed Ham to comfortably sprawl and get back up. Hirata attempted to shoot in once more, but Ham had no difficulty remaining upright because the takedowns weren’t properly set up. Before the first round was over, Hirata made two more unsuccessful efforts at takedowns.
Prior to entering the ring for the second round, Itsuki Hirata received an warning from referee Herb Dean for being inactive. Hirata kept trying to knock down opponents, but he had little luck. Hirata moved in for a takedown attempt but swiftly pulled guard as he desperately tried to get the fight to the ground. Ham was able to stand up again, but Hirata held to her opponent and continued to fish for a leg against the fence until she was taken down over the halfway mark. Before the round’s conclusion, Ham was able to stand up again and make a separation.
Itsuki Hirata was probably behind in the standings going into the third and final round but provided little offense, earning Herb Dean a yellow card in the first minute of the round. Hirata quickly managed to press Ham against the cage wall and attempt a takedown after getting the caution. Even though she was able to get Ham onto the canvas, she was never able to exert much influence before the final bell.
